Get To Know Your Counselor and His Experience...

In addition to the many years working with adults, Neil also has extensive training and experience working with children and adolescents. During his doctoral program, he completed his clinical internships at a private practice near Nashville, Tennessee. After finishing his PhD program, studying counselor education and supervision, Neil moved back to his hometown in North Georgia so that he could be closer to his family.  He was soon hired at Johns Creek & Alpharetta Counseling (JCAC), a private practice located in Alpharetta, GA.

Neil feels honored to be a part of the team at JCAC.  In a culture filled with care, respect, and helping people, JCAC has a great selection of skilled clinicians with many different specialties.  We have also been given the prestigious award, the "Best of Georgia" for any mental health practice, for the third year in a row!!

During his formal education, Neil has received degrees from Clemson University, The University of Georgia, Capella University, The Medical University of South Carolina, and Harvard Business School.

While finishing his Master's degree in 2010, Neil worked as a counselor at a non-profit counseling agency helping children, teens, and adults who had experienced trauma from abuse and/or domestic violence. He also has many years of experience working with adult couples, utilizing emotionally focused therapy (EFT).  Neil also has many years of experience helping adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, substance abuse disorder, alcohol dependence, relationship problems, and many other areas as well. Neil is currently working at Johns Creek & Alpharetta Counseling (JCAC), where he has the pleasure of working with individual adolescents and adults, as well as couples counseling for anyone who might like to reignite their relationship, or counseling can also be incredibly valuable as people may have started discussing the possibility of going through a divorce.  Counseling sessions can help everyone know more about what to expect, develop communication styles that actually work, and possibly agree on a few co-parenting terms.  Neil is a certified cognitive behavioral therapy practitioner and he also has extensive training using Child-Centered Play Therapy. He is currently in the process of becoming a Registered Play Therapist and a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS).

One of Neil's most influential experiences was volunteering as a counselor for Young Life, a non-profit Christian outreach organization for teenagers. Growing up in a large adoptive family, Neil has had many years of personal and professional experience working with the foster care system and the process of adoption.

In his free time, Neil likes to spend time with his family and children, writing music, creating digital art, painting, and many other hobbies as well.  "We really love to spend time together... whether it's going on family trips and vacations together, or just hanging out at the house, there always seems to be something fun that we can do together.  If we do go out of town, we typically like to go visit all of the animals at the Atlanta zoo and aquarium.    As a family, we love going hiking and getting lost in the woods together, going fishing, learning about computers and programming languages, going up to Stone Mountain or Gibbs Gardens... or a lot of times we just go to the local park and kick the soccer ball around.  And at least once or twice a year, we try to go visit Dollywood and Pigeon Forge, TN.  That has become a really special place for all of us to go visit, as a family tradition every year."

While finishing graduate school, studying counseling and psychology, Neil was also working as the IT Director for an engineering firm in Alpharetta, GA.  After he began studying Psychology at the University of Georgia, and started on the long journey towards becoming a professional therapist, Neil realized that the mental health field is where he wants to focus the rest of his career, because he discovered his passion for helping people and he feels honored to be a part of each client's journey as they begin to discover a whole new version of their life.

After finishing his degree in Psychology from UGA, he was then accepted into a graduate program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling.  Throughout the Master's program, Neil worked as a counselor and a group facilitator at the Children's Center for Hope & Healing in Gainesville, GA.  A few years later, Neil was accepted into a doctoral program for counselor education and supervision.  While completing this Ph.D. program, Neil was working at Life Counseling Center, a private therapy practice that is located close to Nashville, TN.  While working at this private practice, Neil also had an amazing mentor and supervisor for many years.  He wants to thank all of his supervisors, mentors, family members, and professors who have helped to shape him into becoming the down-to-earth, calm, eclectic, and compassionate counselor that he has always been working towards the process of becoming.

Throughout Neil's career working in the mental health field over the past 16 years, he still feels really grateful to have had the opportunity to help someone discover how they can completely change their life... "It all starts with just a quick phone call or an email message.  You can contact me anytime!  I provide free phone consultations to all new clients, so that I can answer any questions you have about the therapy process, while also telling you more about myself and all of my experience.  We can start by creating a few small goals together, based on the changes that you'd like to see in your life.  Then we will continue developing those goals throughout the therapy process, as you begin to see all of the changes happening in your life.  It is such an honor to see each of my clients every week, especially because I get to be a part of their journey, as they are growing and changing into the person that they have always wanted to become.  It's really amazing to be a part of that... showing them how to not just survive in the world, but instead, discovering how to thrive... especially when a client begins reaching all of their therapeutic goals and noticing the amazing changes that have started to happen in their life."

In addition to doing therapy work, Neil also owns several small businesses and he enjoys staying busy; especially when spending lots of time with his kids and family.  Some of Neil's favorite things to do with his kids are playing soccer, teaching them how to build computers, going hiking in the woods, and learning programming languages on Linux.  To see some of the arcades that he has built, visit:
